Founding campaigner Jacqui Barrington worked closely with other ENGOs such as Forest and Bird and the Maruia Society, and the NZ Tropical Timber Importers Association, to stop imports of destructively logged timber from the Asia Pacific region to New Zealand, and to promote alternatives.<\/p>\n\n<p>Allied to this was the Greenpeace Pacific Campaign\u2019s work on the issue which included boat tours of Melanesia in the early 1990s that documented destructive logging practices and the emergence of palm oil plantations, and promoted alternatives sources of income from smaller-scale ecological community-based projects such as ecotourism and butterfly farming.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"799\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-history-aotearoa-stateless\/2021\/09\/1ceeb0bd-gp017xb_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"June 1991 - Abandoned logging company - a lot of wood &amp; junk has been left behind. Western Provinces, Solomon Islands.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Both \u2018ends\u2019 of the campaign \u2013 in New Zealand and Melanesia \u2013 came together around the development of new ecotimber and tapa cloth projects with local communities, and allied campaign work, in the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand driven by Grant Rosoman, Lafcadio Cortesi, and Lawrence Makili.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace International subsequently ran a \u2018Paradise Forests\u2019 campaign in Indonesia and Melanesia in the 2000s. Part of the Greenpeace event, &#8216;Wings of Paradise&#8221; highlighting deforestation in the Indonesian province of West Papua.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>That in turn led to more campaigning in New Zealand on the import of huge quantities of palm kernel expeller (PKE) from Indonesia as livestock feed.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace New Zealand\u2019s Suzette Jackson and Rob Taylor were part of a group that set up a \u2018Forest Defenders Camp\u2019 in Indonesia in 2007 that contributed to Greenpeace\u2019s global efforts to protect the world\u2019s remaining ancient forests.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then in 2009 a Greenpeace New Zealand team led by Communications Manager Suzette Jackson travelled to Sumatra, Indonesia, accompanied by an independent journalist and an independent New Zealand farmer to document the devastation wrought by palm plantation companies there.
